In 1992, Dr. Robley D. Bates, III founded the Newtown Hunt Club. It began as a place for family and friends to enjoy a day of dove shooting, good food and lively conversation. While the club has evolved to include many more events, the spirit of the club still remains as a place where friends can get together, appreciate the country and have a great hunting experience. In 2005, newtown Hunt added The Boulware Shooting Society under its umbrella of shooting options. this is a separate club from Newtown Hunt Club. However, Newtown Hunt members have the opportunity to participate in pheasants shoots if a guest spot becomes available. Lee Boulware, a Bates' relative, built the present clubhouse in 1823. the Bates family passed on the Lee Boulware House to Dr. Thomas Bates who practiced medicine there until 1895. The house and property have remained in the Bates' family since that time. It has served as a working farm, a private school and a hospital during the civil war. The property has been recognized by the commonwealth of Virginia as a Century Farm documenting that it has been owned and continuously farmed by the same family for over 100 years.
